Nortel Could Get Bid on LG Stake from Huawei
Foreign Ownership Could Spark Opposition from Canadian Lawmakers

Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) has made it clear it will sell its stake in the LG partnership, but a number of Canadian lawmakers also have made it clear they want to keep the telecom equipment maker in the family, as it were. So as word comes today that China-based equipment manufacturer Huawei is interested in buying Nortel’s LG ownership, it would be no shock if Canadian officials vehemently opposed such a transaction. LG Electronics and Nortel combined forces in November 2005 to develop and sell WiMAX products. LG and certain courts in Canada must approve any proposed sale.
