Whitacre, Ex-AT&T CEO, to Front New GM Ads

Can We Expect A Whole Different ‘Pipes’ Discussion?

09/10/2009

What’s that you say? You miss Ed “Why Should They Be Allowed to Use My Pipes” Whitacre?

So do we. Really, since Whitacre retired from AT&T Inc., the net neutrality debate hasn’t been half as interesting.

But that’s OK. Whitacre has since resurfaced as the head of the newly restructured General Motors. And starting Sunday, we all get to watch Whitacre talk about a different kind of pipes.

Sept. 13 is the day GM will debut a new series of commercials featuring Whitacre, who will tout the company’s new “Satisfaction Guaranteed” program. Through November, GM will offer consumers a full refund, after 60 days, on their new purchases of any its brands – Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.

Whitacre, according to people who have seen the commercials, says GM is “putting our money where our mouth is.”

OK, so that’s all well and good. But we can’t help wondering (and perhaps sort of hoping) if Whitacre’s going to explode to BusinessWeek again and say something like, “They can’t buy my cars for free!”

Welcome back, Ed!
