Car Crash Death Partly Blamed on Texting

Here’s more evidence that using your cell phone while driving can be extremely dangerous: An investigation now reveals that a British Columbia man killed in a traffic accident earlier this year, was texting at the time.

Police say Michael Wolsynuk’s BlackBerry shows he was in mid-text when his truck jumped a median and hit another vehicle on January 10. Wolsynuk, 26, from Victoria, B.C., died six days later as a result of massive head and neck injuries. The other driver was only slightly hurt.

Texting can’t entirely be blamed for the crash. The road was wet and there was some standing water in a curve in the road, which could have caused the truck to hydroplane. Wolsynuk also was not wearing a seat belt, which police say contributed to the severity of his injuries.

Like a handful of states in the U.S., some provinces in Canada have restrictions on cell phone use while driving. British Columbia is not one of them.
