Juniper Networks Inc. (JNPR) executives are taking a 5 percent pay cut as the company seeks to balance fewer sales with higher R&D spending.

CEO Kevin Johnson actually is reducing his salary by 10 percent.

The news came during Juniper’s presentation today with analysts, who also learned that the equipment maker plans to increase R&D costs by 15 percent while avoiding big M&A deals. The R&D will include further work with IBM Corp. (IBM) to develop new cloud computing products and services.

Investors appeared receptive to the news; Juniper’s stocks closed up 4.18 percent at $14.95.
