Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) has made it clear it will sell its stake in the LG partnership, but a number of Canadian lawmakers also have made it clear they want to keep the telecom equipment maker in the family, as it were.
So as word comes today that China-based equipment manufacturer Huawei is interested in buying Nortel’s LG ownership, it would be no shock if Canadian officials vehemently opposed such a transaction.
LG Electronics and Nortel combined forces in November 2005 to develop and sell WiMAX products. LG and certain courts in Canada must approve any proposed sale.
