Low-cost MVNO TracFone Wireless is now in the market with a $45-per-month unlimited talk-and-text package that includes 30 MB of data.
The offer undercuts rivals like MetroPCS and Boost Mobile, which sell their prepaid unlimited packages for $50 per month.
The move comes among fears of a wireless price war, led by consumers’ increased thirst for prepaid packages and a recessionary economy. Tier 1 players are holding out, however: TracFone’s underlying carrier, Verizon Wireless, offers its unlimited offering for $100 per month, postpaid.
