RIM to Pay Visto $267.5M for Patent Infringement

Three years ago, BlackBerry addicts nearly lost their service because Visto Corp., parent company of Good Technology, wanted a court-ordered shutdown stemming from alleged patent infringement.

Fortunately for Research In Motion’s (RIMM) loyal users, that didn’t happen. And, a repeat request appears unlikely now that RIM has agreed to pay Visto $267.5 million to settle patent misuse claims.

Analysts said settling was the right move because Visto, unlike firms such as NTP, was a legitimate competitor and stood a solid chance of getting an injunction against RIM. It’s also a well-funded company that holds dozens of patents.

RIM gets perpetual licensing rights out of the deal.
