Motorola Inc. has launched its own applications ecosystem for its Android-based smartphones. The idea is to have “signature” applications for Motorola devices that can be pre-loaded, embedded or downloaded depending on developer, vendor and carrier preference.
"Motorola's ecosystem partners around Android have developed signature applications that consumers increasingly expect with their mobile device," said Christy Wyatt, vice president, software applications and ecosystem, Motorola Mobile Devices, in a statement. "Working closely with these companies allows us to provide a compelling mobile Android-based experience that satisfies specific consumer needs."
Motorola is focusing on differentiation as the industry gears up for what will soon be a flood of new Android handset launches from various manufacturers. It recently announced the Android-based CLIQ, coming to T-Mobile USA. The CLIQ comes with MOTOBLUR, which is a service that synchs all social networks into one portal. More Android devices from Motorola are to come, the company said last month, with Verizon Wireless the next rumored carrier partner.
Motorola MOTODEV, the company's global program for developers and independent software vendors, offers a streamlined path into multiple distribution channels including Android Market and operator channels.
