Motorola Solutions and Verizon Wireless have announced plans to team up to support a private/public safety-controlled broadband network.
The companies say they will leverage Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network and offer public safety agencies access to real-time management and control, enhanced nationwide roaming and site sharing of existing mobile broadband sites.
“Motorola Solutions’ Public Safety LTE solution includes innovative multiband LTE devices and real-time device management and control," said Bob Schassler, senior vice president of Radio Solutions, Motorola Solutions.
The companies made the announcement about a month after the Federal Communications Commission adopted a standard technology to help police, firefighters and other emergency responders more effectively communicate with one another in a crisis.
The FCC said all 700 MHz public safety mobile broadband networks must use Long Term Evolution (LTE) to support roaming and interoperable communications. FCC Commissioners cited the 9/11 attacks as evidence that the nation needs to improve its emergency response communications network.
It is uncommon for the FCC to select a common technology platform such as LTE, but FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said last month, “There’s widespread agreement that a common air interface is desirable and necessary to enable nationwide interoperability."
