Ericsson will deploy its latest core network and multi-standard radio base stations (RBS 6000) to help modernize LIME’s mobile network in the Caribbean.

LIME, an arm of the Cable & Wireless Communications group, is upgrading its network in 12 different Caribbean territories. The carrier expects improved mobile broadband services will result for users in Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Turks and Caicos. The company sees it as a big boost for residents, businesses and the many tourists who make their way into the region every year.

"An important part of our mandate is to ensure that the Caribbean is served by the most modern telecoms technology available and that our consumer, enterprise and carrier customers have access to world-class services," said LIME CEO David Shaw. “We know Ericsson can deliver this for us."

"With the latest technology from Ericsson, LIME will be able to roll out new advanced services and join the smartphone global boom," said Martin Roos, head of Ericsson in the Caribbean. “With IP-centric network architecture, LIME will have the ability to respond to the fast-changing business models we see today."

The contract includes network design, rollout and professional services. The companies say this will pave the way for LIME to migrate its network to an all-IP architecture; improve coverage, capacity and quality; and prepare for a smooth introduction of HSPA Evolution and LTE. HSPA Evolution technology providing 21 Mbps will be introduced in the Cayman Islands in the first phase of the modernization process, with the rollout to additional markets planned for later this year.
