CenturyLink, Inc. earlier this week announced an order worth about $250 million to provide private line services for dedicated high-speed connections between military installations.

Under the terms of the order from the Defense Information Systems Agency/Defense Information Technology Contracting Organization (DISA/DITCO), CenturyLink will provide private line services to the Department of Defense.

The telecommunications provider noted it will serve all DOD agencies, including the Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy, when the five-year task order is fully implemented next year.

"CenturyLink's private line services have extensive geographic coverage that will ensure fast, direct, and secure communications between U.S. military bases, posts, camps, and stations," said Diana Gowen, senior vice president and general manager of CenturyLink Government, which is based in Arlington, Va.

CenturyLink said it became a significant provider of communications services to the military through other DISA/DITCO contract programs following its April 2011 acquisition of Qwest Communications.
