Virgin Mobile USA, one of Sprint's prepaid brands, plans to reduce data speeds for customers who consume more than 2.5GB of data in a month.

The change affects Virgin Mobile's Beyond Talk Plans and is being implemented on March 23.

The company explained in a recent press release that customers will receive a text message alerting them of reduced data speeds for the rest of a given month once they have reached their allotment. Virgin Mobile said it may reduce data speeds to 256Kbps or less for the remainder of the month. Speeds will return to normal the following month under a customer's plan, the company said.

"By putting this data speed reduction in plan," Virgin Mobile said, "we're making sure we can deliver the same quality service you've come to expect from Virgin Mobile."
