Adult Movies Going Crazy on iPads, Kindle Fires, Other Tablets

Adult video, which has a history of paving the way for the way we consume all types of video (i.e. so long, HD DVD, hello Blu-ray), is about to make a huge move in the tablet PC space.

The amount of adult content available on tablets is expected to triple by 2015, according to a new report from Juniper Research, which says the number of people turning to iPads, Kindle Fires and other tablets for their porn video and video-chat fix will also triple over the next three years.

It might grow even faster, Juniper says, if it weren't for the fact that a significant proportion of tablets are shared devices; after all, you don't want the kiddies stumbling across what adults are watching. The move toward "multiscreen" experiences also means that consumers may be reluctant to purchase content solely for the tablet. In some regions, legislation and social attitudes toward porn will also restrain the growth of the mobile adult industry, Juniper says.

That increase in content and users will obviously result in a big spike in revenues for the adult entertainment industry, and potentially the tablet manufacturers if porn is a motivation for purchasing one. Tablet owners are generally more affluent than the average user, and are more likely than smartphone users to own a credit card – even in emerging markets. This means that tablet users are likely to spend more, and more often on mobile adult content than the average smartphone user, the research firm said.

Specifically, Juniper says revenues generated from adult content on tablets will increase more than fivefold by 2017 and the average annual spend on mobile adult subscriptions for handsets will increase 11 percent by 2015.

"Tablets combine the privacy of a smartphone with a large screen, particularly suited for content consumption," said report author Charlotte Miller. "It is clear that, as with many other types of content, users of mobile adult content will want to access content on their tablets as well as on smartphones and PCs."
