Netflix has released an application for Apple devices that lets customers only stream from Netflix when they are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Available for download from the Apple iTunes App Store, the latest version of the app could help customers avoid unexpected data overage fees on 3G and 4G cellular networks owned by the likes of AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Netflix on Thursday also announced the release of its new video player for the iPad, iPhone and iPod.

In other news involving the streaming video provider, The Motley Fool has reported the company has agreed to pay $9 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of retaining cancelled subscribers' customer information for longer than permitted under the Video Privacy Protection Act. The preliminary settlement in federal court is slated to be approved in late June, according to the report.
