Real-time IT management company ManageEngine now supports mobile-application management in the latest release of Desktop Central, its server and desktop management software.

Desktop Central has expanded mobile-device management (MDM) capabilities and now includes integrated chat and support for Apple iOS 6, Microsoft Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

Employee mobility for many companies has become crucial to employee productivity; in turn, use of mobile apps within the enterprise is soaring, making mobile application management an important capability in IT departments. IT managers want support for popular devices like Apple's iPhone and iPad, as well as Microsoft servers and devices.

"The worldwide smartphone and mobile market is expected to grow exponentially in the years to come," says Mathivanan Venkatachalam, director of product management at ManageEngine. "As more and more companies go mobile, we committed to meeting the increasing demands placed on today's enterprises by continuously improving our mobile device management feature set. Mobile-application management is simply the latest example of that commitment."

ManageEngine says Desktop Central adds mobile-application management functionality via its MDM add-on module. Now, in addition to configuring and securing individual mobile devices and groups of devices, Desktop Central lets IT users perform mobile-application management tasks, including: creation of an application repository of both in-house and App Store apps; distribution of applications to individual devices and groups; and removal of apps from individual devices or groups.

Desktop Central 8 starts at $10 per computer annually for the Professional Edition. The MDM add-on module support is available on all the editions, and prices start at $15 per device annually. The Free Edition of Desktop Central manages up to 25 computers and two mobile devices.
