The FCC is on board the small-cell train as a way to streamline and speed up deployment of mobile broadband infrastructure across the U.S.
As part of its Broadband Acceleration Initiative, the Commission says it wants to simplify the process for deploying these temporary cell towers to expand coverage during special events.
It's something analysts at Yankee Group say is imperative.
“Reducing barriers to small-cell deployment is an essential step to help sustain growing mobile broadband traffic loads. Use of small cells is vital because the alternative – freeing, allocating and assigning new spectrum – is a long process that is ultimately limited by demands of all spectrum stakeholders," noted Yankee Group principal analyst Ken Rehbehn, commenting on an RCR Wireless article about the initiative.
