Intec Gets High Marks on Low Footprint

07/18/2008

Intec Telecom Systems said it has successfully completed an eco-friendly performance benchmark of its Convergent Billing system, Singl.eView 6.01. The benchmarking was done on a grid of Sun SPARC Enterprise Servers with CoolThreads technology and running the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS). The benchmark demonstrated the capability to distribute its charging, billing and customer care application across multiple low cost, low power Sun Ultra SPARC processors without sacrificing performance.

This configuration is ideal for telecommunications service providers who wish to significantly reduce their IT infrastructure costs and power requirements.

Intec’s Convergent Billing supports more than 100 million subscribers for major Tier 1 operators, which require both price/performance and energy/performance as they grow.

Gary Bunney, Intec’s chief operating officer said, “This benchmark demonstrates that Intec Convergent Billing can support millions of pre-paid subscribers on a grid of Sun SPARC Enterprise Servers with CoolThreads technology and proves that Intec Convergent Billing scales down for smaller, high-growth operators, just as well as it scales up for the largest Tier 1 operations.”

The benchmark was conducted in January at the Sun Solution Center in Manchester, United Kingdom on a grid of five Sun SPARC Enterprise T2000 Servers and Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 Servers, each with processors running at 1.2 GHz, in a grid configuration with a shared database. The benchmark demonstrated high performance and linear scalability across a range of real-time convergent rating, balance management, on-line transaction processing, charging and billing tasks from a typical large carrier environment.

“This benchmark illustrates that Sun and Intec can help achieve the efficiencies our customers require for their business and their eco responsibility. The configuration is an excellent choice for established and startup service providers concerned with cost efficiencies and environmental impact,” said Darrell Jordan-Smith, vice president, communications and media practice, Sun Microsystems.

The test included both on-line and off-line charging. While performing on-line charging (a standard requirement in pre-paid and convergent services), Intec Convergent Billing achieved sustained throughput of 6 million busy-hour call attempts using a five server grid. The grid contained active and standby servers for high availability and resilience. The power efficiency of the benchmark demonstrates more than a 30 percent improvement over traditional single-server power consumption, pointing to even lower total cost of ownership.
