Mobile World Congress: NSN Saves the (Telecom) Damsel in Distress?

02/17/2009

Nokia Siemens Networks (NOK) says it’s introduced new hardware and software, as well as professional services, at Mobile World Congress to “defend and enhance” telecom operators’ sales.

That’s quite a claim and a very knight-in-shining-armor one, at that. But given the variety of programs it’s showcasing, maybe there’s something to it.

For example, NSN has debuted a new base station and multicontroller that it says uses less energy than similar products from rivals. There’s also new equipment for Long-Term Evolution networks. Plus, “expert consultants” (is that not redundant?) are on hand to talk about improving operations, from increasing network speed to delivering services more quickly. Next there’s a new unified charging and billing platform and, finally, a new wireless backhaul system for mobile operators.

Will the gallant NSN live up to its own hype and save the telecom damsel from the dragons of the economy?
