Nortel Pensioners May Have Hope in Parties’ Proposals

12/09/2009

Apparently, there is a ghost of a chance that Canadian officials will tackle pension reform, a matter brought to the fore as Nortel Networks’ bankruptcy has cheated thousands of pensioners out of their benefits.

The problem hasn’t been the same in the United States, where pensions are protected.

Now, different parties in Canada are proposing different solutions to the pension problem in Canada; the crossover is that both acknowledge the inadequacy of Canada’s retirement system and call for the government to be more involved in forced-savings setups.

The question is whether anything will actually come of the proposals. So far, nothing has cropped up from pensioners’ many protests over the way they’ve been treated.
