Nortel Still Tops in Carrier VoIP, Tests 100G Fiber

Good carrier VoIP news continues for bankrupt Nortel Networks, which, according to analysts, is still the market leader in that market.

Also, the vendor on Monday announced that SURFnet, a research and education network in the Netherlands, has completed a 100G trial on its live 10G/40G international broadband network connection between the Netherlands and Germany, using Nortel optical technology. The connection covered a distance of 1244km of fiber without using electrical regeneration equipment.

Nortel also said that U.K.-based JANET, a research and education network, and Verizon Business have successfully completed a 100G trial across a 103 km section of fiber between JANET’s core network points of presence in London and Reading during April 2009. Verizon provided the fiber infrastructure and facilities as the operator of JANET’s U.K. backbone network, with Nortel providing the 100Gbit/s optical technology and test equipment.

Bankrupcy hasn’t gotten in the way of Nortel’s VoIP business too much, apparently: In Dell'Oro Group's recently published Carrier IP Telephony report 1Q 2009, Nortel maintained its global leadership position for softswitches with 20.3 percent global market share.

And according to Infonetics Research's recent report, Nortel maintained its worldwide revenue leadership position in softswitches and is the global leader in VoIP overall.
