Reason for Concern? Top Radiation Handsets Named

5 Motorola Phones Make Dubious Top 10 List

09/10/2009

A new report from the Environmental Working Group names what it says are the cell phones that emit the highest radiation. The Motorola Moto VU204 and the T-Mobile myTouch 3G top the list. Motorola has four other phones that made the dubious top 10.

On the flip side, the report names the Samsung Impression as the cell phone that emits the lowest levels of radiation. And while their phones ranked No. 1 and No. 2 for the highest emissions, Motorola and T-Mobile also had phones that made the list of the 10 lowest emissions.

EWG is a nonprofit researcher with a goal of protecting health and the environment. The group says its information on radiation is important because the federal government doesn’t require handset makers and vendors to relay details about emission levels to the public.

EWG’s report includes some obvious safety tips, like using the speakerphone option and simply talking less. You’re also encouraged to send more text messages as an alternative and use the phone less when you have a weak signal.

Health agencies in six European countries have issued warnings about excessive cell phone use, especially regarding children, who they claim are more susceptible to the radiation. No such warnings have been made in the U.S.
