Redknee Awarded Patent for IP Services Method

01/07/2009

Redknee has been issued a U.S. patent that will enable network operators to charge for services and applications delivered via their IP infrastructure in real-time to both prepaid and postpaid subscribers.

The patent is for the company’s “method for implementing an internet protocol (IP) charging and rating middleware platform and gateway system.” Redknee says the innovation allows for charging based on a number of attributes, including service type, quality of service and time of day, as well as protocol-specific attributes.

“At Redknee, we are committed to investing in the development of innovative solutions that address the challenges faced by our customers now and in the future. Today’s announcement reinforces our position as a leading innovator in our industry, while providing our customers with the advanced technologies they need to succeed in this dynamic marketplace,” said Lucas Skoczkowski, CEO of Redknee.

Technologies associated with the real-time rating and charging of IP traffic will be increasingly relevant as a growing proportion of network operator revenue is derived from data services and applications, according to the company. Analysts have noted that operators will have to transform their IP infrastructure from “dumb pipes” to “smart pipes” in order to support the growing demand for global data services, estimated to be worth US $251.9 billion by 2012.
