Sex Offenders Dumped From MySpace, Facebook in NY

12/05/2009

There are now 3,500 fewer registered sex offenders with Facebook and MySpace accounts in New York state.

The social networking sites removed the accounts in accordance with a state law signed last year by Gov. David Paterson. The law forces registered sex offenders to reveal their e-mail addresses and bans online social networking for any offenders who were convicted of victimizing a minor.

The New York attorney general’s office says more than 8,000 sex offenders have given their e-mail addresses to the state. Nearly half of those had MySpace or Facebook accounts.

MySpace eliminated 90,000 sex-offender accounts nationwide earlier this year.
