TM Forum Sees Framework Validation in ITU-T Acceptance

08/01/2008

In mid-July, the ITU-T accepted the TM Forum Information Framework, also known as the Shared Information and Data (SID) model. The forum said this validates the need for a common model across the industry and enterprises as well.

Martin Creaner, president of the TM Forum, said the recommendation by the ITU-T validates the framework’s strength as a means of representing information requirements specific to different areas of service providers’ businesses.

The ITU-T recommendation was led by Dave Sidor of Nortel Networks and Knut Johannessen of Telenor. Called ITU-T Recommendation M.3190, it encompasses both the product and service domains, business view concepts, principles, and an Information Framework Primer addenda. These elements of Recommendation M.3190 will serve as an introduction to the Information Framework Analysis Model, which will cover all of the information required to implement use cases based on the Business Process Framework known as the eTOM, or enhanced telecom operations map.

“We’re not stopping here; future submissions to the ITU-T will include other SID domains as well,” said Josh Salomon, enterprise software architect at Amdocs. For two years, Salomon worked on due diligence with other TM Forum members and staff, including subject matter expert John Reilly; Paul Levine, standards development consultant at Telcordia (ret.); and John Wilmes, chief technical architect at Progress Software.

“We will continue to ensure the SID analysis model is implementation-independent,” added Wilmes, noting the Information Framework team will continue to focus on information and relationships to enable multiple implementations to be derived from a single common model.
